Prefecture of Chania

The well known -heroic- village in the province of Kydonia, on the foots of the White Mountains (16km south of Chania, 113 inhabitants). The way to the village passes through an impressive gorge, lenght of 6km. It is a place of historical importance. The local people fighted strongly against the Turks who repeatedly tried to ruin the village. In 1866, the village was set on fire by the Moustafa Naeli pasha and many inhabitants -among which the mother of E.Venizalos- left for Cythera and Peloponnesus. In 1905, E.Venizelos and its men proclaimed in Therisso the revolution against the despotic regime of prince George -inflicted by European powerful countries-, openining the way to the liberation of the island. The brothers Chaledes, heros of the Revolution of 1821, were born here.
